Emotional Well-Being

Being stressed is a natural part of life. Let’s face it: Between work, family, finances and our health, it’s hard to avoid it. If you’re living with psoriasis, you may have realized by now that in addition to other physical symptoms, like a headache or muscle tension, stress may trigger your psoriasis.

The good news is that you have the power within yourself to keep your stress in check, so the next time it starts to weigh you down, have these tips handy (try printing them out or writing them down in a journal for easy reference).

Take charge

Be your number one fan. Advocate for yourself. Share your thoughts and feelings about your stress with family and friends. Find a doctor you trust. And, if you find that your stress is overwhelming you, consider seeing a medical professional who specializes in coping techniques.

Educate yourself

There are plenty of resources available for people living with psoriasis, and for their friends and family to learn as much about the disease as possible. Just by coming this far, you’ve taken a step toward understanding your body inside and out. Keep at it, because when you know what to expect, you’ll be better prepared to deal with it.

Put yourself first

An age-old method to relieve stress is to find the time to enjoy the things that you live for. Whether it’s delving into a favorite book or going to the movies, do what makes you happy.

Just breathe

Practice deep breathing, yoga or meditation to decompress and to lower your stress levels. Pamper yourself with a soothing massage or create your own sanctuary right in the comfort of your own home by lighting candles or playing soothing music.

Keep moving

Of course, it might seem easier to cut out exercising when you’re not really in the mood. There are days when being a couch potato is what you need to do. The key is to keep moving just a little everyday. Not only does exercise improve your mood, it reduces your stress level, and, in turn, may make you physically and mentally stronger to help manage your psoriasis.
